A Unique and Personal Wedding in the Netherlands Inspired by Music, Tattoos and American Fairs

How do you bring together a love of music, tattoos, camping and the colourful energy of American state fairs, and turn it into a wedding that feels elegant but bold, and cohesive but completely personal? Check out how we created a unique wedding design in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

That was the creative challenge Max and Merel gave me, and it is exactly the kind of brief I love. They did not want a wedding built around trends, or around traditions that did not feel like them. They wanted something that was unmistakably theirs. Their wish was simple to say and wonderful to design for: they wanted their guests to walk in and immediately think, this wedding could only belong to Max and Merel.

Designing a unique wedding in the Netherlands

When a couple brings together worlds as different as vintage American fairs and modern music and tattoo culture, the real risk is a day that feels like two separate parties stitched together. The work, and the joy, is in finding the single creative direction that lets both live happily side by side.

That is where my background in design comes in. Rather than treating their passions as a checklist of themes, I built one visual and emotional language for the whole day, so that every choice, from the colours to the styling to the flow of the evening, felt like part of the same story. Bold did not have to mean chaotic, and personal did not have to mean unpolished. Everything was allowed to be loud, heartfelt and still beautifully put together.

A historic farm with a character of its own

The celebration took place on a beautiful historic farm in Rotterdam, but the atmosphere was anything but traditional. A venue with real character gives you so much to work with, and this one became the perfect backdrop for a day that gently broke the usual wedding rules while still feeling warm and grounded.

Merel's connection to the United States inspired the joyful, nostalgic energy of American state fairs, full of colour and play. Max's love of music, his distinctive style and his tattoos brought a cooler, more unconventional character to the day. Two very different influences, held together by one intention, so that the result felt both exuberant and effortlessly them.

Details that told their unique story

A tattoo corner, live music, a silent disco, camping elements and a campfire were never added simply as entertainment. Each one was chosen because it said something true about who Max and Merel are and how they love to bring people together. Guests did not just attend the wedding, they stepped inside the couple's world for a day.

That is the difference between decoration and design. When every element is tied back to the people at the centre of the day, the celebration stops feeling styled and starts feeling alive. The result was a deeply personal wedding that felt colourful, unexpected and full of life, while still remaining elegant and cohesive from the first moment to the last dance.

For me, this is what thoughtful wedding design is all about. It is not about choosing a theme. It is about translating a couple's personality, history and passions into a celebration that could never belong to anyone else.
