How to Plan a Wedding in the Netherlands as an International Couple

Planning a wedding in the Netherlands as an international couple is exciting, and, if we are honest, a little daunting. You may be marrying far from where you grew up, coordinating guests flying in from several countries, and navigating a language and a set of customs that are not your own. The good news is that the Netherlands is one of the loveliest and most welcoming places in Europe to marry, and with the right approach it can feel far simpler than it first looks.

This is a guide to how it actually works, from the legal formalities to the celebration itself, written from years of designing and planning weddings here for couples who come from all over the world.

The legal part, made simple

Let us take the least romantic part first, so we can move on to the good bit. Getting married in the Netherlands as an international couple is very achievable. As a general rule, at least one partner needs to live in the Netherlands or hold Dutch nationality, and you give formal notice of your intention to marry, known as ondertrouw, to the municipality where you will marry. You will need identity documents, birth certificates and, depending on your nationality, some legalised or translated paperwork.

The exact requirements depend on your situation and your municipality, so always confirm the details with the town where you plan to marry, or with a reliable expat resource such as IamExpat.

One thing many international couples do not realise: the legal ceremony and the celebration do not have to be the same event. Plenty of couples handle the legal formality quietly, sometimes even in another country, and then hold the wedding that truly matters to them, the one with the design, the guests and the atmosphere, wherever and however they wish. That freedom is one of the most liberating things about planning a wedding here, and it is where our work begins.

When to start planning

For a full wedding with a venue, vendors and guests travelling in, we usually recommend giving yourselves around twelve months. The best venues and photographers in the Netherlands book up well over a year ahead, especially for the most popular months between April & September. If your timeline is shorter it is still very possible, it simply means moving quickly and decisively on the big bookings first but please consider a minimum of 6 months.

Where to marry: the settings the Netherlands does beautifully if you are planning a wedding here.

One of the joys of marrying here is the sheer variety of settings, and each one carries its own atmosphere. A canal house or historic townhouse gives you elegance and a strong sense of place in the heart of a city. A country estate, or landgoed, offers space, greenery and a relaxed, grand feeling. A historic farm brings warmth, character and room to be playful. And the Dutch coast, with its wide beaches, is perfect for couples who want something natural and unstructured.

Choosing the setting is not only a practical decision, it is the first and most important design decision you will make, because everything else, the styling, the flow, the mood, grows from it. This is exactly why we begin every wedding with a clear creative direction, rather than a venue booked in a hurry.

What a wedding in the Netherlands really costs

It helps to be realistic about budget from the very beginning, because it shapes every decision that follows. A full celebration in the Netherlands, with a venue, catering, photography, flowers, styling and everything that makes a day feel complete, typically falls somewhere between thirty and sixty thousand euros for an average guest count, and often more for larger or more elaborate weddings. Your choices, your guest numbers and your venue will move that figure up or down significantly.

A wedding that is thoughtfully designed and fully coordinated is an investment, and the couples we work with are generally planning celebrations from around twenty five thousand euros upward. We share this openly because we would rather be honest early than have you spend time on a conversation that was never quite the right fit. If that range feels aligned with what you have in mind, we will almost certainly be able to create something extraordinary together.

Planning across languages, cultures and countries

This is the part we love most, and the part where an international couple benefits most from a local planner who understands both worlds.

A wedding that brings together different nationalities is a beautiful thing, and it comes with its own quiet complexity. Guests arriving from several countries, two families with different ideas of what a wedding should be, vendors who speak Dutch (and loved ones who do not), traditions from more than one culture that you want to honour without the day feeling like two weddings stitched together...and much more.

Holding all of that together, so that every guest feels included is a delicate work, and it is exactly what we do. Our team works in English, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, which means nothing is lost between you, your guests and the people bringing your day to life. When it is done well, none of this effort is visible. The day simply feels warm, seamless and authentic to you.

Why plan your wedding with a local design studio

Planning a wedding from another country, or in a culture that is not your own, is a great deal to carry alongside your busy life. A local planner does far more than take tasks off your plate. We know the venues before you have to visit them, the vendors worth trusting, the seasonal quirks of the Dutch weather, and the small cultural details that make a celebration here feel right. And because we start with design, your wedding becomes one coherent story rather than a collection of separate cute things you've found on the internet.

You bring the vision and we bring the structure, the local knowledge, the language and the calm to make it happen without stress or loose ends. For a feel of how this comes to life, take a look at a unique wedding in the Netherlands or a modern destination wedding in Spain.

Getting married in the Netherlands as an international couple can be one of the most joyful decisions you make, and you do not have to navigate it alone. If you are dreaming of a beautifully designed, thoughtfully planned celebration here, and the investment feels right for you, we would love to hear your story.
